Den franske parlamentarikeren og tidligere transportministeren Thierry Mariani har vært på besøk i Syria, og det budskapet han bringer tilbake til Vesten er at «Valget er enkelt: det er enten Assad eller Den islamske staten.» Til den russiske nettavisa RT sier han:
Whatever the regime of Bashar Assad is, this regime protects minorities and it is close enough to the West. I saw about 20 women deputies, as well as opposition leaders, who said, «It’s either Assad or chaos,” …
“When I hear some caution in the West on this issue, I say: ‘The dilemma is simple: either Assad or ISIS.’”
Mariani viser til det som skjedde i Libya og sier:
“We see what happened in Iraq and Libya. Let’s first try to win the war against the terrorists, instead of looking for a miracle man and destabilizing the situation [in Syria]. In this war, the Syrian army is an ally, and I think the presence of Assad is necessary for at least the transition period.”
Thierry Mariani tilhører altså Frankrikes største parti, opposisjonspartiet Republikanerne, som ledes av tidligere president Nicolas Sarcozy. Det betyr at det i ledende kretser i Frankrike begynner å bli en forståelse for at den vestlige alliansens krig i Syria kan føre til at IS tar makta, hvis man ikke allierer seg med Assad. Noe tredje alternativ finnes ikke.
